The Latest

YIPEE! YAHOO! YEEHAW! Can you tell I'm happy? Hayden graduated and Grad Nite is over and I can now get back to life. Hayden was so handsome during the graduation ceremonies. I started getting really verklempt when they played Pomp and Circumstance and he marched in. Can you believe we have a kid who is now an adult? How quickly they grow up! My sweet little towhead is now preparing for his mission and his first year of college. He was just called to be a primary teacher, so that will be interesting to watch him in his first "grown up" calling.

Hayden reminded me at church yesterday that I no longer had to sign permission slips to go on church activities because he is 18. That is sooo weird.

Connor decided that I was relaxing too much and got sick on Thursday. He woke up not feeling too hot that day with a low-grade fever. He tooks some Advil, was feeling better and taking out the trash when his right lower chest really started to hurt. He got a pain so bad that he fell to his knees. How's that for scaring the crap out of your parents? Russ came over and ruled out a bunch of stuff, but said we need to get him in to the doc on Friday. Then the spots started coming out...and more spots...and more spots. These pictures are early on and don't show how his lips blistered and how the spots have now all grown into one another and he is one huge hive. In addition, his fever started to climb to over 102... The doc thought is was coxsackie, but when she heard about the chest pain she ordered an x-ray. She called us that afternoon and said the radiologist personally called her (I guess they never do that...) and told her that he had a very "impressive infiltrate" in his lower right lung (whatever that means) that had all the signs of Valley Fever. Lovely! I thought Valley Fever was something we were all exposed to, but never had any sickness. She wanted me to take him for a blood test and told me that it could be serious and we don't want it to "disseminate" (that is a very bad thing). No prednisone for the rash because it inhibits the immune system. All very comforting things that a mom wants to hear. Well his rash and fever got so bad on Sat. that I had to get him into Urgent Care. The pediatrician there tells me it is probably a bacterial pneumonia and that he needed to treat the rash because he thought that it was Erethyma Multiforme (don't you love latin?) and wanted to make sure it didn't turn into something worse. He said to make sure we take him into the ER if any blisters show up, because this could be Stevens Johnson Syndrome that puts patients into burn units to be treated and the fatality rate is quite high. (Can you see where I am totally freaking out by now?) So now we are taking a Z-pak antibiotic and prednisone on Sat. night and Sun. Guess who calls me first thing on Monday? His pediatrician telling me to take him off the prednisone immediately. Oh, did I tell you that his rash and fever were sooooo much better on Sunday? This definitely wasn't what I wanted to hear from the doc, especially since we won't know if it is Valley Fever for a week. So we are all saying a prayer that he turned a corner and is on the mend. More news later... Update: as of 11 p.m. on Monday, Connor is still fever-free and his lips are much better...

CRAP! Leave it to Connor.

Maybe it's a new disease. Caused by texting too much. ;)

In all seriousness, that is scary. I hope they figure out what it is, and he gets better. I'll be calling you again.

The good news-Congrats to the grad! And THAT picture is the Hayden I remember! Bad news-what's up with your other son? Poor boy. I looked like that when I was around fifth grade and got Scarlet Fever. Blech! I'm sending good thoughts your way!
